        IMPORTANT VOCAB WORDS USED IN P.T.E EXAM

Some important vocabularies noted down while practicing reading section. The meanings are taken from Oxford Dictionary. sb – somebody sth - something


1. Abrasive -rude and unkind
2. Abstain- to stay away from sth
3. Advent- the coming of an important event, person, invention, etc
4. Affect- to produce a change in sb/sth
5. Affluent- prosperous, wealthy
6. Amateur- a person who takes part in a sport or other activity for enjoyment, not as a job
7. Anticipate- expect/predict
8. Antiquity- the state of being very old
9. Anxious- feeling worried or nervous
10. Blatant- (disapproving) (of actions that are considered bad) done in an obvious and open way without               caring if people are shocked
11. Brittle- hard but easily broken
12. Clogged- to block sth or to become blocked
13. Compel- to force sb to do sth; to make sth necessary
14. Conceded- to admit that sth is true, logical, etc
15. Conducive- making it easy, possible or likely for sth to happen
16. Connotation- an idea suggested by a word in addition to its main meaning
17. Consensus an- opinion that all members of a group agree with
18. Contend- to compete against sb in order to gain sth
19. Contentment- a feeling of happiness or satisfaction
20. Criterion- a standard or principle by which sth is judged, or with the help of which a decision is made
21. Critique- to write or give your opinion of, or reaction to, a set of ideas, a work of art, etc
22. Daunt -to make sb feel nervous and less confident about doing sth
23. Deceptive- likely to make you believe sth that is not true
24. Deficit- the amount by which sth, especially an amount of money, is too small or smaller than sth else
25. Defy- to refuse to obey or show respect for sb in authority, a law, a rule, etc
26. Deprive- to prevent sb from having or doing sth, especially sth important
27. Deteriorate- to become worse
28. Detoxify- to remove harmful substances or poisons from sth
29. Devoid- completely lacking in sth
30. Devours- to destroy sb/sth
31. Disfigure- to spoil the appearance of a person, thing or place
32. Dissuade- to persuade sb not to do sth
33. Distort- to twist or change facts, ideas, etc. so that they are no longer correct or true
34. Effect- a change that sb/sth causes in sb/sth else; a result
35. Efficacy- the ability of sth, especially a drug or a medical treatment, to produce the results that are                 wanted
36. Elicit to- get information or a reaction from sb, often with difficulty
37. Elite- a group of famous people
38. Emanate- to produce or show sth
39. Embody- to express or represent an idea or a quality
40. Emergence- to become known (word from emerge)
41. Eminent- famous and respected, especially in a particular profession
42. Emotive- causing people to feel strong emotions
43. Enact- to perform a play or act a part in a play
44. Epidemic- a large number of cases of a particular disease happening at the same time in a particular               community
45. Evade- to escape from sb/sth or avoid meeting sb
46. Evident- clear; easily seen
47. Exactitude- the quality of being very accurate and exact
48. Excavation- a place where people are digging to look for old buildings or objects
49. Fatigue- exhaustion, tiredness
50. Flourish- to develop quickly and be successful or common
51. Fortification- a tower, wall, gun position, etc. built to defend a place against attack
52. Fraught- causing or feeling worry and anxiety
53. Futile- pointless
54. Galvanize- to make sb take action by shocking them or by making them excited
55. Gratify- to please or satisfy sb
56. Hail- to describe sb/sth as being very good or special, especially in newspapers, etc
57. Haste- hurry
58. Heyday- the time when sb/sth had most power or success, or was most popular
59. Hive- a place full of people who are busy
60. Imbue- infuse
61. Imperil- to put sth/sb in danger
62. Indecisive- unable to make decisions
63. Induce- to persuade or influence sb to do sth
64. Inference- (deduction) something that you can find out indirectly from what you already know
65. Innate- (of a quality, feeling, etc.) that you have when you are born
66. Instinct- intuition
67. Intimidate- to frighten or threaten sb so that they will do what you want
68. Levy- an extra amount of money that has to be paid, especially as a tax to the government
69. Lingering- slow to end or disappear
70. Lucid- clear
71. Manifest- demonstrate
72. Mar or marred- ruin
73. Mitigate- to make sth less harmful, serious, etc.
74. Monotony- boring lack of variety
75. Nostalgia- a feeling of sadness mixed with pleasure and affection when you think of happy times in the           past
76. Notion- an idea, a belief or an understanding of sth
77. Obstruct- to block a road, an entrance, a passage, etc. so that sb/sth cannot get through, see past, etc
78. Omen- a sign of what is going to happen in the future
79. Parched- very dry, especially because the weather is hot
80. Peculiar- odd
81. Percolate- (of a liquid, gas, etc.) to move gradually through a surface that has very small holes or spaces         in it
82. Peril- serious danger
83. Permeate- (of a liquid, gas, etc.) to spread to every part of an object or a place
84. Persona- the aspects of a person's character that they show to other people     
85. Pester- to annoy sb, especially by asking them sth many times
86. Plethora- excess
87. Pliable- flexible
88. Precocious- (of a child) having developed particular abilities and ways of behaving at a much younger age       than usual
89. Prevalent- common
90. Prey- a person who is harmed or tricked by sb, especially for dishonest purposes
91. Primitive- old
92. Proliferating- to increase rapidly in number or amount
93. Prolific- (of an artist, a writer, etc.) producing many works, etc
94. Prominent- important or well known
95. Propagate- to spread an idea, a belief or a piece of information among many people
96. Propelling- to move, drive or push sth forward or in a particular direction
97. Propound- propose, put forward
98. Prospect- the possibility that sth will happen
99. Provision- the act of supplying sb with sth that they need or want; sth that is supplied
100. Purveyor- a person or company that supplies sth
101. Quack- a person who dishonestly claims to have medical knowledge or skills
102. Rake up- to mention sth unpleasant that happened in the past and that other people would like to forget
103. Rebel- a person who fights against the government of their country
104. Receptive- responsive/ willing to listen to or to accept new ideas
105. Rejuvenate- to make sb/sth look or feel younger or more lively
106. Reluctant- hesitating before doing sth because you do not want to do it  
107. Reminiscent- reminding you of sb/sth
108. Renaissance- revival
109. Replete- filled with sth; with a full supply of sth
110. Resurrect- revive
111. Roster- rota
112. Scanty- too little in amount for what is needed
113. Scarce- if sth is scarce, there is not enough of it and it is only available in small quantities
114. Sceptical- doubtful
115. Seldom- rarely
116. Shrivel- to become or make sth dry and wrinkled as a result of heat, cold or being old
117. Slump- drop
118. Spasm- a sudden strong feeling or reaction that lasts for a short time
119. Sporadic- happening only occasionally or at intervals that are not regular
120. Statutory- fixed by law; that must be done by law
121. Steep- sharp
122. Succinctly- concise
123. Succulent- juicy
124. Thrive- to become, and continue to be, successful, strong, healthy, etc.
125. Triumph- a great success, achievement or victory
126. Trounced- to defeat sb completely
127. Unison- if people do or say sth in unison, they all do it at the same time
128. Unleash- to suddenly let a strong force, emotion, etc. be felt or have an effect
129. Usurp- to take sb's position and/or power without having the right to do this
130. Veracity- truth
131. Vigorous- energetic
132. Virtue- behavior or attitudes that show high moral standards
133. Vulnerable- weak and easily hurt physically or emotionally
